Digital Library is where knowledge resources are electronically (or digitally) archived in digital environment. It also includes reference materials or resources accessible on Internet. The collections of such resources are managed through an appropriate software application. Digital Library supports knowledge sharing and manages the corporate knowledge in an organized manner.
DSpace is a groundbreaking digital repository system (from Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to capture, store, index, preserve and redistribute digital resources online. This open sourced web application can be deployed in Intranet, Internet and independent systems. The application supports unlimited number of digital items and file types.
Contents in Digital Library are stored in hierarchical clusters. There are three major hierarchies namely Communities, Collections and Items. Communities are main divisions; Collections are subdivisions or titles; and Items have many files. DSpace provides no restriction for the number of Communities, Collections, Items and files under each Item.
Users are given permission to register themselves in DSpace and an administrator defines their roles. An unregistered user can browse and search for information in Digital Library. However, only the registered users can subscribe and submit items for the repository.
Bosco InfoTech provides technical support to install, customize, enhance and extend your Digital Library.
Library Online
There are number of reasons for your library to go online. These could be, affiliation of your institute to a university; spectrum of your library services beyond the campus environment; users are distributed in different places / cities / countries; dissemination of knowledge resources to wider audiences (for research, academic circles, distant education etc.) and so on.
The realistic move towards managing your library and letting it go online, is, going the BLIS way. BLIS comes with free data upload utility which automatically identifies the new entries and upload data to your library website (i.e. LibraryOnline). With in-built features of BLIS, you can publish the catalogue and all the information of your library; and your wider audiences can access all that you have published, globally and at 24 X 7 X 365.
Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) can register members and guests with personalized homepage, can update the member profile, search, pick and /or reserve, user survey list and selective dissemination of information (SDI).
LibNet
Networking of Libraries With the transition-trend of informatics to a knowledge society, libraries need to cope with the rapid and vital changes in knowledge field. Managing these changes is a critical phenomenon that libraries should attend to. Adopting a practical approach to managing the change process and move upward from providing information service to knowledge service is possible through LibNet that networks associated libraries.
LibNet Overview
Creating an information hub of associated libraries provides cost effective and timely services. LibNet is single portal for the networked libraries of different cities or even countries.
It has a centralized repository of all participating libraries. Each participating library can frequently upload their data to update their user-audiences. (BLIS users can automatically update their resource catalogues and other library information through in-built system of BLIS. Others can migrate to B-LIS or acquire Data Upload Tool and participate in LibNet)
LibNet establishes strong information base by networking libraries. It enables each library to share its unique resources at national / continental level. Sharing the information on knowledge resources creates current awareness system among associate libraries and the users.
Any academic, research or public library that follows library standards The undertaking was to efficiently organize and administer libraries without much human resource and time, basing on library science and standards. A platform independent and multilingual intranet solution was developed to administer libraries. Using this solution, one can access the online catalogue from any system configured to the library intranet, maintain multiple resource types - books, CDs, Cassettes, Micro Film, Articles and others. The solution conforms to any standard of Library Management such as Anglo American Cataloguing Rule (AACR) and Classified Catalogue Code (CCC).
